GET THE LOOK - SPA BATHROOM
CREATE A SOPHISTICATED SPA BATHROOM
The owner of this listed 200-year-old former rice warehouse wanted to create a classic space using porcelain bathroom tiles together with striking mosaics that would imbue the room with a contemporary edge. Realising that the result she was looking for was beyond her capabilities, she enlisted the help of one of London's top designers - Lara Francis. Together they decided to use the creamy opulence of mother-of-pearl as the focal point of the room.
'Mother-of-pearl is one of the few naturally occurring materials which is impossible to imitate – unlike marble or stone - so it commands a high price point,' Francis comments. Bearing this in mind, mother-of-pearl was used on the back walls of the niches and for the splashback only. To make the budget go further, they used iridescent Bisazza glass mosaics for the sides of the niches and the shower tray.
To create the calm, refined, spa-atmosphere the client requested, Francis kept the palate neutral and opted for grand, large scale porcelain bathroom tiles on the walls and the floor. 'The scale of these porcelain bathroom tiles was crucial to the overall design,' says Francis 'I wanted to ensure there were as few grout lines on the walls and floors as possible. The surface needed to appear uninterrupted and continuous. The overall effect is stunning but also price-conscious.'
