BATHROOM TILES: TRENDS IN THE UK - BACK IN BLACK
IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR SOMETHING A BIT DIFFERENT FOR YOUR BATHROOM, THEN BLACK TILES COULD DEFINITELY BE THE RIGHT CHOICE FOR YOU!
Working closely with some of the world’s leading manufacturers, Surface keeps a continual eye on emerging trends and influences what tile schemes, colours and textures find their way into some of London’s most exclusive homes.
Jules Archard, Sales Manager for Surface, reports: “Think black, and lots of it. Last year’s trend towards dark bathroom tiles in warm greys and taupes is moving towards striking new statements in pure black, glossy bathroom tiles and mosaic”.
Bisazza have fashioned some new combinations from their already popular mosaic patterns, with the introduction of a new, metallic gloss black mosaic and black mosaic blends such as Rachele and Iside. Damasco Black offers a fresh take on last year’s popular damask pattern, borrowing from the visual language of fabric and wallpaper design. With a black background, the pattern itself is realised in a glossy, metallic black mosaic. This twist on a formal design brings it right up to date and it sits well with this year’s trend towards moody opulence. Similarly, Hearts New Black is a great black-on-black alternative to last year’s white-on-white bathroom tiles best seller. Etoiles Nero is another example of Bisazza introducing black into a popular pattern to create pure modern luxury.
Further mosaic options include the Colibri Grey Flannel range from Italian manufacturer SICIS, offering row upon row of bathroom tiles in high gloss, black mini bricks. Advanced technologies allow black to branch into new territory, for example Glamwood Nero, which convincingly mimics black lacquered hardwood.
For large format options, consider semi-polished black porcelain such as Modex Banox Light Lappato. Jules also has some valuable tips for when it comes to designing a black bathroom: “Think about varying the materials and finishes used. Shifting the tone slightly in one direction or another creates depth and variety. And remember, with carefully planned lighting and wall washes, black needn't be bleak; dramatic reflections and shimmering dark surfaces can be both uplifting and luxurious.
With bathroom furniture giants Alape and Catalano, amongst others, now making black sanitary ware, there's only one thing in your bathroom that has to stay white, and that's your toothpaste!”
